What are ventilation and air-conditioning systems?

Ventilation and air conditioning systems (RLT systems) are systems that are responsible for air exchange and thermal air treatment in rooms and buildings. Their task is to influence air quality, air temperature and air humidity. Basically, the task of a ventilation system is to create certain room conditions or to improve outside air. For this reason, ventilation systems are equipped with powerful filters, cooler and heating registers and (in some cases) humidification systems. AHUs are individually adapted to the requirements and application area. Ventilation and air conditioning systems is a generic term for various ventilation systems such as air conditioning units, partial air conditioning units, air recirculation units, air recirculation units with outside air component, door curtains, ceiling ventilation and many more.

When are air conditioning systems prescribed?

Ventilation systems play an important role in the ventilation strategy of a room or building. As a rule, ventilation systems are used when other ventilation routes (e.g. opening windows) no longer provide sufficient air exchange or other climatic aspects (e.g. polluted outside air, high degree of purity in the building or room) make air treatment necessary.

Indoor air systems are mandatory for rooms in which certain climatic conditions or climatic-physical conditions are required. For example, operating theatres must have a sufficiently powerful room air system to produce (in the case of room class 1a) a sufficiently strong laminar air flow or to obtain particularly low-particle air.

 

Cleaning of air conditioning systems

The cleaning of air conditioning systems is particularly important in order to eliminate or prevent health hazards. Soiled systems can contain bacteria, moulds / yeasts and dust, among other things. Dust particles in particular can cause allergic reactions in those affected. Particles with viruses or diseases can also be distributed in the building. In this respect, a room air system represents an optimal living space for germs, as it provides them with everything they need to grow: sufficiently warm temperatures, humidity and carbon.

At this point, we would like to emphasize that viruses cannot multiply within an air handling system because they need a host cell to reproduce. However, viruses can be spread inside a building by adhering to a particle (dust, aerosol etc.). Without accurate and correct hygiene inspections and cleaning of your HVAC system, the health of your employees, customers or visitors can be endangered.

In addition to the hygienic aspect, regular cleaning of an HVAC system - and the associated ventilation systems - reduces the risk of downtime and the energy required to create specific climate conditions.

At the same time, such measures are required by law through the workplace regulations in conjunction with VDI 6022.

Technical service life of components and equipment

The technical life span indicates the period of time during which the usability and intended function of a component is to be fulfilled and the cost of maintaining the stock is lower than the cost of producing the component in question. Therefore, the technical life may differ significantly from the economic life (useful life).

There are various factors on which the technical life depends:

  • optimal construction planning and execution
  • Consideration of the building material properties
  • Consideration of user behaviour
  • professional maintenance, inspection and repair
  • Consideration of environmental influences, such as pollutant and temperature effects or UV radiation

Testing of ventilation and air-conditioning systems

Optimal and hygienic ventilation technology in workplaces requires accurate and correct inspections that fully comply with the currently applicable standards and guidelines. The inspection of an HVAC system is carried out either separately or directly after cleaning. A distinction must be made with regard to the inspection of room air systems:

  • Initial hygiene inspections according to VDI 6022
  • Hygiene follow-up inspections according to VDI 6022
  • Inspection of ventilation systems in buildings and rooms of the health care system according to DIN 1946-4
  • Qualification and periodic testing of clean rooms according to DIN 14644
  • Inspection of the room air system and the air conduction system for tightness and energetic aspects

 

 

Energetic optimisation of air conditioning systems with gesaAEROSEAL®

What is gesaAEROSEAL®?

gesaAEROSEAL® is a groundbreaking technology for the subsequent sealing of already installed air duct systems from the inside and can therefore be used for air ducts in existing buildings as well as for newly installed systems.

 

The patented AEROSEAL technology was developed in the USA in the 1990s. Since then, over 125,000 air ducts have been sealed in residential and commercial buildings. gesaAEROSEAL® sets new standards for air duct sealing in Europe.

How does gesaAEROSEAL® work?

For the sealing process with gesaAEROSEAL® a sealant is atomised with the help of compressed air and heat and is introduced into the air pipe by a fan. The aerosolized particles are then deposited on the leakage of the system, but not on its intact surface. This successively seals leaks up to a diameter of 1.5 cm. These then withstand a pressure of up to 2,000 Pa.

 

The advantages of gesaAEROSEAL®:

Dense air duct systems

Restricted access to the air duct system, leaks - consisting of many small leaks - make the search for leaks in the air duct system extremely difficult. When sealing with gesaAEROSEAL® the sealant carried by the air flow is automatically deposited at the leaks in the system.

Speed

A team of 2 to 3 service technicians is sufficient for the sealing, which is reflected in a low expenditure of time and personnel. This speed cannot be guaranteed with conventional methods for sealing air ducts.

Increase of comfort and hygiene

Due to the tightness of the air pipes there is no loss of heat or cold. An even distribution of heat and cold throughout the building is guaranteed. The sealant is harmless to health and can be used in sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals and other public facilities.

Documentation

Before and after sealing, the total leakage of the system concerned is determined and recorded in a certificate. In addition, this document shows the reduction in leakage achieved.

Energy Saving

The energy saving targets set out in the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) are implemented via the Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV) and further via standards and directives. If the air tightness class of the air control system is not known, leakage of up to 15% can be expected, and in the case of air tightness class A the leakage rate is still 6%.

Considerable savings of CO² - a comparison

In order to compensate for CO2 emissions due to leakage losses in air conditioning systems in accordance with EnEV 2009, approx. 136 spruces would have to be planted per year if the air tightness class was unknown. After reaching air tightness class B only 18!
